Fisker Automotive lays off workers while renegotiating government loan

The layoffs include 26 workers at a former General Motors plant in Wilmington that Fisker is retooling to manufacture its Nina plug-in hybrid sedan. Another 40 contractors and employees who were working in design and development of Fisker’s Karma luxury car in Anaheim, Calif., also have been cut.

The layoffs come as Fisker is seeking to renegotiate its loan agreement with the Department of Energy.

Fisker has received $193 million of the $529 million DOE loan, mostly for work on the Karma, which sells for about $100,000. The introduction of the Karma was delayed because of regulatory issues and battery pack problems that prompted a voluntary safety recall by Fisker.

GOP Frontrunner Mitt Romney Against Online Gambling. Says He Doesn’t ‘Want to Increase Access to Gaming.’

Mitt Romney, the frontrunner for the GOP’s nomination to run against President Barack Obama, told Las Vegas political journalist Jon Ralston last week that he is against online gaming.
When asked if he is a supporter of legalizing the activity, Romney responded: “No, no I’m not. Gaming has a social effect on a lot of people. I don’t want to increase access to gaming. I feel that we have plenty of access to gaming right now through the various casinos and establishments that exist.”

The former governor of Massachusetts, a Mormon, is not alone in his stance against online gaming among his faith. About a week ago, a Utah lawmaker introduced a bill that would preemptively ban online gaming in the state.

While the federal government mulls over online gaming, some states are considering the industry. Nevada, with regulations already in place and licensing on the horizon, is by far the furthest along.

It’s possible that Romney’s position isn’t all that relevant.

“Ultimately, I don’t think any presidential candidate’s current position on online gaming is going to matter much, since many states are going to take it upon themselves to legalize online gaming within their own borders,” UNLV’s Dr. David Schwartz told Card Player. “Just as with Indian gaming in the late 1980s, Congress will likely be forced to act.”

“[Romney] has changed his position on virtually everything,” Guiliani said. “He was a traditional moderate Republican, strong on fiscal matters, conservative, strong on foreign policy, but basically socially moderate. And he changed all that.”

“I am a moderate Republican, that’s what I am. So I’d be inclined to support someone like Mitt Romney. But all those changes in positions give me pause.”

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s tax plan is “significantly better” than the one rival Mitt Romney proposes, renowned economist Arthur Laffer writes in an Op-Ed in The Wall Street Journal.

“Mr. Gingrich has a significantly better plan than does Mr. Romney, and he has twice before been instrumental in implementing a successful tax plan on a national level — once when he served in Congress as a Reagan supporter in the 1980s and again when he was President Clinton’s partner as Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 1990s. During both of these periods the economy prospered incredibly — in good part because of Mr. Gingrich.”

Laffer notes that the best way for government to raise revenue “is a broad-based, low-rate flat tax.”

Such a tax should give individuals and companies the fewest reasons to avoid taxes and the fewest way to do so. He writes that Gingrich’s proposal of an optional 15 percent flat tax for individuals and 12.5 flat tax for business have both been tested.

“Hong Kong, where there has been a 15 percent flat income tax on individuals since 1947, is truly a shining city on the hill and one of the most prosperous cities in history. Ireland’s 12.5 percent flat business income tax propelled the Emerald Isle out of two and a half centuries of poverty.”

Meanwhile, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney’s tax proposals — they include eliminating the inheritance tax; reducing the corporate tax rate to 25 percent; and extending the current tax rates on personal income, interest, dividends, and capital gains — “don’t have the boldness or internal integrity of Mr. Gingrich’s personal and business flat taxes.”

“Mr. Gingrich’s tax proposal is not revenue-neutral, nor should it be,” Laffer writes. “If there’s one truism in fiscal policy, it’s this: Wasteful spending will always rise to the level of revenues. Whether you’re in Greece, Washington, D.C., or California, overspending is a prosperity killer of the first order. Mr. Gingrich’s flat tax proposals — along with his proposed balanced budget amendment — would put a quick stop to overspending and return America to fiscal soundness. No other candidate comes close to doing this.”
