Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney wants to continue to screw middle America.

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said on Fox News Sunday that he wants to maintain “the progressivity” of the tax code so that as Americans make more money they are required to surrender increasing percentages of their earnings to the federal government in taxes.

Romney has a long record of opposing a flat tax–even investing more than $50,000 of his own money during the 1996 presidential campaign to run newspapers ads attacking then-presidential candidate Steve Forbes’s flat-tax proposal as a “tax cut for fat cats.”

“What about the argument that you’re saying the same class warfare?” Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace asked Romney. “And you hear this from a lot of people. The Wall Street Journal, which generally liked your plan, says it’s the same old Obama class war argument. Yes, you’re going to reduce capital gains taxes for the middle class, not for the rich.”

GOP Frontrunner Mitt Romney Against Online Gambling. Says He Doesn’t ‘Want to Increase Access to Gaming.’
by Brian Pempus

Mitt Romney, the frontrunner for the GOP’s nomination to run against President Barack Obama, told Las Vegas political journalist Jon Ralston last week that he is against online gaming.
When asked if he is a supporter of legalizing the activity, Romney responded: “No, no I’m not. Gaming has a social effect on a lot of people. I don’t want to increase access to gaming. I feel that we have plenty of access to gaming right now through the various casinos and establishments that exist.”

Check out the full Romney interview below.

The former governor of Massachusetts, a Mormon, is not alone in his stance against online gaming among his faith. About a week ago, a Utah lawmaker introduced a bill that would preemptively ban online gaming in the state.

While the federal government mulls over online gaming, some states are considering the industry. Nevada, with regulations already in place and licensing on the horizon, is by far the furthest along.

It’s possible that Romney’s position isn’t all that relevant.

“Ultimately, I don’t think any presidential candidate’s current position on online gaming is going to matter much, since many states are going to take it upon themselves to legalize online gaming within their own borders,” UNLV’s Dr. David Schwartz told Card Player. “Just as with Indian gaming in the late 1980s, Congress will likely be forced to act.”

Giuliani Still Won’t Endorse Romney, Changed on ‘Virtually Everything’

Asked by Schieffer why he still won’t endorse Romney, Giuliani responded:

“[Romney] has changed his position on virtually everything,” Guiliani said. “He was a traditional moderate Republican, strong on fiscal matters, conservative, strong on foreign policy, but basically socially moderate. And he changed all that.”

“I am a moderate Republican, that’s what I am. So I’d be inclined to support someone like Mitt Romney. But all those changes in positions give me pause.”

Economist Laffer: Gingrich’s Tax Plan ‘Significantly Better’ Than Romney’s
By Henry J. Reske

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s tax plan is “significantly better” than the one rival Mitt Romney proposes, renowned economist Arthur Laffer writes in an Op-Ed in The Wall Street Journal.

“Mr. Gingrich has a significantly better plan than does Mr. Romney, and he has twice before been instrumental in implementing a successful tax plan on a national level — once when he served in Congress as a Reagan supporter in the 1980s and again when he was President Clinton’s partner as Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 1990s. During both of these periods the economy prospered incredibly — in good part because of Mr. Gingrich.”

Laffer notes that the best way for government to raise revenue “is a broad-based, low-rate flat tax.”

Such a tax should give individuals and companies the fewest reasons to avoid taxes and the fewest way to do so. He writes that Gingrich’s proposal of an optional 15 percent flat tax for individuals and 12.5 flat tax for business have both been tested.

“Hong Kong, where there has been a 15 percent flat income tax on individuals since 1947, is truly a shining city on the hill and one of the most prosperous cities in history. Ireland’s 12.5 percent flat business income tax propelled the Emerald Isle out of two and a half centuries of poverty.”

Meanwhile, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney’s tax proposals — they include eliminating the inheritance tax; reducing the corporate tax rate to 25 percent; and extending the current tax rates on personal income, interest, dividends, and capital gains — “don’t have the boldness or internal integrity of Mr. Gingrich’s personal and business flat taxes.”

“Mr. Gingrich’s tax proposal is not revenue-neutral, nor should it be,” Laffer writes. “If there’s one truism in fiscal policy, it’s this: Wasteful spending will always rise to the level of revenues. Whether you’re in Greece, Washington, D.C., or California, overspending is a prosperity killer of the first order. Mr. Gingrich’s flat tax proposals — along with his proposed balanced budget amendment — would put a quick stop to overspending and return America to fiscal soundness. No other candidate comes close to doing this.”

Gingrich Never Fined on Ethics Matter, Records Show

Associates of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are stepping forward to rebut accusations from Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney that he resigned in “disgrace” and paid an ethics “fine.”

Sliding in the polls, Romney has opened a full broadside on Gingrich focused on the former speaker’s ethics issues. Gingrich felt the criticism was significant enough on Monday to forcefully challenge Romney’s characterization of his term as speaker.
“The Democrats had filed 84 ethics charges for a simple reason,” Gingrich said Monday. “We had taken control of the House after 40 years, and they were very bitter.”

The IRS launched a three-year probe to investigate that charge. It dropped its investigation after declaring that Gingrich’s courses were “educational in content.”

House Special Counsel James M. Cole alleged that a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization paid for two courses Gingrich taught at Georgia colleges. Cole stated that the courses, titled Renewing American Civilization, were “substantially motivated by partisan, political goals,” and therefore a violation of the organizations’ tax-exempt status.

Watch Mitt Praise Ted Kennedy for His Role in Passing RomneyCare

What symbol best reflects Mitt Romney?

Despite copious evidence to back up the connection, GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney has yet to admit the link between the Massachusetts health care overhaul he signed into law as governor and the federal overhaul President Obama passed last year. You can understand why he’s declined: Given that Romney is running as an establishment conservative for the Republican nomination, the friendly connection to the rival party’s leader and his most prominent policy achievement would be, well, kind of awkward.

Poll: Cain Overtakes Romney With GOP Primary Voters

Newsmax/InsiderAdvantage poll shows businessman and radio talk host Herman Cain now leading former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney among likely GOP primary voters in the fight for the 2012 Republican nomination.

The exclusive poll, taken in the past 24 hours, shows Cain vaulting Romney 26 percent to 24 percent. The poll has a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

Several other polls show similar results, establishing Cain as the new grass-roots front-runner deadlocked with Romney, the establishment Republican choice.

A new CBS poll showed Cain and Romney deadlocked, with each candidate garnering 17 percent of the vote. And a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows Romney leading Cain 22 percent to 17 percent — a statistical tie because of the poll’s margin of error.

Cain’s emergence corresponds with Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s fall from front-runner status, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s decision Tuesday not to throw his hat in the ring.

Herman Cain Wins Florida Straw Poll Ahead Of 2012

Candidates Romney & Bachmann to opt against campaigning for support & don’t get any support.

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain came out on top in the Florida straw poll on Saturday.

The former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza won the test of conservative strength with roughly 37 percent of the vote. Texas Governor Rick Perry came in second place, followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who did not actively compete in the event. Here’s a full breakdown of the results:

Herman Cain: 37.11%
Rick Perry: 15.43%
Mitt Romney: 14.00%
Rick Santorum: 10.88%
Ron Paul: 10.39%
Newt Gingrich: 8.43%
Jon Huntsman: 2.26%
Michele Bachmann: 1.51%

“This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored,” Cain said in a statement addressing the results. “I will continue to share my message of ‘common sense solutions’ across this country and look forward to spending more time in Florida, a critical state for both the nomination and the general election.”

Perry, who was expected by many to win the straw poll, signaled his belief earlier in the day that it was a “big mistake” for rival candidates like Romney and Bachmann to opt against campaigning for support in the event. The Lone Star State Republican said, “I’ve got all my hopes on Florida.”
